Intek – actions
ROHS standards
While the majority of Intek products already comply with Removal of Hazardous Substances (ROHS) standards, not every product can. However, we are committed to ensuring that every 'applicable' product will comply with ROHS standards before the end of 2009.
EEE standards (recycling of products with lead and PCB's).
Partnerships
- Intek products are not only sourced from suppliers with a reputation for producing quality products, but their reputations in relation to sustainable practices and ethical standards are equally important considerations. Accordingly all of the suppliers to Intek listed below have comprehensive environmental policies
- Where possible all Intek partners manufacture product in ISO 1401 (environmental factory management) certified facilities.

Optex (Sensors, indoor and outdoor detection devices)
Power consumption
- Intek deliberately chooses to sell products that are calibrated to be the most energy efficient products of their type available. This means you can be assured that the products you are installing will provide your customers with reduced levels of power consumption.
Packaging
- All product packaging is currently 80% recyclable. The aim is to achieve total recycling of all packaging by enabling our customers to return used packaging to one of our 3 branches to be recycled. Our packaging is not bleached, ensuring less harmful by-products are used in the initial manufacture.
Corporate
- Intek is currently undergoing a fleet conversion from both petrol powered and conventional diesel powered vehicles to modern, common rail, diesel powered vehicles. Common rail, diesel vehicles emit up to 63% less carbon dioxide than petrol vehicles and post exhaust filters remove any residual particulate matter
- Timers have been installed in all Intek premises to control electrical usage e.g. lighting and AC after hours to reduce power consumption
- Specifically, lighting is now controlled through a security system, with increased switching flexibility so that redundant lights are turned off automatically
- All computer screens have been changed from CRT's to flat screen LCD's in order to capture greater energy efficiency
- All locally made promotional and corporate print collateral is published on papers sourced from sustainable forests and processed in ISO 14001 (Environmental accreditation) factories, and printed using vegetable printing inks
- Paper and cardboard are recycled as are toner and printer consumables
- Intek has deliberately re-engineered its ordering processes to enable more reliance on sea freight as opposed to using air freight to receive goods from overseas suppliers. Intek is also investigating the option of further reducing the number of sea freight shipments annually
- A carbon footprint assessment of Intek's operation will be completed by mid 2008.
Tree Planting
- Once our carbon footprint assessment is complete and Intek is satisfied that all recommendations have ben faithfully implemented, a tree planting programme will be undertaken to offset all remaining excess emissions and Intek will become New Zealand's first carbon neutral certified security distributor. We are aiming to be certified carbon neutral by April 2009.
