Fyran – actions

Fyran's Environmental Statement

For more than 55 years Fyran has manufactured rugged and practical boats from aluminium. Fyran is committed to manufacturing aluminium boats in the most energy efficient manner possible.

Recycling

Aluminium is the only boat building material that is virtually infinitely recyclable. The timber that was traditionally used for boat building was harvested from old growth native forests and fibreglass is a petrochemical product. Neither can be recycled at the end of the product life cycle whereas aluminium is easily recycled.

Technical and Operational Efficiency

Fyran is actively building an environmentally responsible approach to boat building. Fyran boats are manufactured from aluminium base stocks that contain up to 75% recycled material. Boats constructed from aluminium are lighter than boats constructed from conventional material and they require less power, resulting in lower fuel consumption and reduced exhaust gas emissions. Lighter boats are more easily towed, so the tow vehicle uses less fuel and also has reduced exhaust gas emissions.

In 2007 Fyran invested in a CNC router, a computer controlled precision machine that accurately cuts aluminium sheet, minimising waste. Whilst plasma cutters are more common, a CNC router was chosen for environmental reasons. Plasma cutters emit toxic smoke and fumes as by-product of the cutting process. Another by-product of the plasma cutting process is aluminium oxide, a compound that has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. The panels cut by the CNC router that require welding are significantly more accurate than those achieved by hand-cutting resulting in faster welding, using less electricity. Fyran has also invested in eight new welding machines that are up to 10% more efficient than the models they replaced.

Further energy savings have been achieved with the installation of the latest technology, high-efficiency air compressor. When the factory has excess capacity for current operational requirements, the air compressor is geared down to supply current factory needs, reducing the amount of energy needed to operate. This feature minimises redundancy as the compressor can be reconfigured, rather than replaced, as factory expamds.

The Auckland East Tamaki factory uses as much natural light as possible to minimse the use of electric lighting.

As well as recycling all aluminium waste, Fyran also recycles wood and cardboard packaging material.

Shipping and Packaging

All cardboard and timber packaging is recycled.

Corporate

The Fyran vehicle fleet is a mix of mechanical injection diesel, common rail diesel and four cylinder petrol. The factory forklift is powered by CNG gas.
